i am currently sporting espresso your style, by OPI. and sometimes, chocolate shakespeare, by the same. short, blunt, and dark.
I see alot of girls at my school where black.
short, squared black nails or dark purple
dark nail polishes are in i think...colours like black, dark red, plum, etc.
bright colors like pink, orange, bright green, and neon blue are in style at my school
yellows blended with pink or red

I think that nail polish is a very subjective subject -- as you can tell, there are so many varying opinions that have been stated already.





However, black nail polish is seen worn very widely right now (make sure that you use a high quality nail polish if you go this route -- otherwise, you will merely obtain streaky, grayish nails -- definitely not classy . . . ).





The french manicure is always in style, and you can buy kits to obtain home manicures for inexpensive prices (no need to pay twenty dollars for a single manicure . . . check out Sally Hansen's, which you can buy at a drug store like Long's, Walgreens, or Savons). A recent trend that I've observed is the reverse french manicure (white/colored on the majority of the nail and the light pink on the tip), but be careful because this can often make your hands/fingers appear stubby and pudgy.





I've seen a lot of dark colors lately, but you should be careful with these because if you have short or stubby fingers, these shades can accentate these qualities.





Pastel colors, such as light pinks, purples, blues, and browns/beiges, are great for spring and summer and can actually, like the french manicure, seem to elongate your fingers (an extra advantage to the cute colors!).





You most definitely do not have to follow a specific trend/style when it comes to nail polish. Show your individuality and be bold (but just don't go for neon colors -- major fashion no-no =D ).

plain old classic red! you know, just apply two coats. anything less will peel quickly, and anything more will look gunky.

i think it is black. i see a LOT of girls, even preppy and girly girls, wearing that shade. pink is very in too, probably because it is such a flattering color. and so pretty. i hope that helps you out.
